"CW: In-Class AT" Case

Case Description

Yvonne has a documented disability that she has disclosed to her professor in her Advanced Composition class. Expressing ideas through in-class and take-home writing assignments is one of the course learning objectives listed on the course syllabus. She uses assistive technology (A) to support her writing assignments, an accommodation that the Disability Support Services (DSS) office has verified. Her professor is planning an in-class writing assignment.

How should the professor prepare for Yvonne's participation?

Response 1.
The professor should be sure there is a computer with AT available in the classroom for Yvonne's use, or Yvonne may bring her own computer with AT. He should receive her assignment with the expectation of possible grammatical errors.
Response 2.
The professor should offer an alternative assignment, for example, creating a Power Point presentation, to the entire class that will fulfill the goals of the in-class writing assignment and demonstrate students' best knowledge of the topic.

The professor may give Yvonne the assignment to complete outside of class, which allows her to use her AT at her discretion.
