Faculty can facilitate disclosure
by encouraging students with disabilities to:
- Disclose early. The earlier students disclose their disability
status to, and register with, the Disability Support Services (DSS) office,
the sooner DSS can identify the appropriate accommodations to facilitate the
teaching and learning process. However, when students disclose to DSS, the
DSS office cannot share a student's disability information with faculty
unless obtaining the student's permission to share such information.
Therefore, students also need to disclose their need for accommodations directly
to faculty so faculty members, students, and DSS can work together to coordinate
appropriate accommodations.
- Disclose how the disability impacts their ability to benefit
from a particular delivery system, instructional method, or evaluation criteria.
Instead of discussing the diagnostic label, the student should clearly articulate
or demonstrate how the disability affects them in the classroom.

- Describe the disability in multiple ways. Disabilities may manifest themselves in different ways, which is unique to an individual student. Medical terminology used to describe the disability is not usually helpful to the faculty in making modifications.
