Case Description

Dr. Martinez is teaching an applied mathematics course in the upcoming autumn semester. Over the summer, the professor begins to plan the course and to create a syllabus. As a logical first step in organizing the curriculum, Dr. Martinez decides to refine the course goals and create tangible standards, or benchmarks, associated with the goals as measures of student performance.

Goal 1: Students will appreciate how mathematics is used as communication. Benchmark: Express mathematical ideas in journals or portfolios.

Goal 2: Students will apply concepts from geometry. Benchmark: Use transformations such as slides, flips, and rotations.

Goal 3: Students will recognize rational numbers in a variety of equivalent forms. Benchmark: Identify factors and multiples including common factors and common multiples.

Which brain networks is the professor attempting to tap into to enhance student learning? Match the goals and benchmarks with the correct order of learning networks.
