Applying Universal Design to learning means that we're moving beyond making sure that the classroom is accessible. Universal Design for Learning is about making sure that there are alternatives, that there are ways in which every student in the class can learn. So Universal Design is doing the same sort of thing that we do for buildings, to make sure that everyone can get into the building; it's making sure everyone can get into the curriculum, and in particular, making sure that everyone can get into the learning. The key thing in Universal Design for Learning, or in curriculum materials that are universally designed, is to build flexibility into the materials themselves, so that a teacher or a student can do that kind of individualizing that we need.
