How does web accessibility affect distance education?

More and more curricular content is showing up on the web. Instructors are moving from referencing material on the web to administering curricula, including tests and information on the Web.

To accomplish this, several software vendors provide applications that can be used to develop, administer and monitor courses taught entirely through the web. The largest vendors are:

WebCT – Short for Web Course Tools, WebCT provides a robust integrated environment for online course development. http://www.webct.com/. For WebCT accessibility specifics, visit http://www.webct.com/service/ViewContent?contentID=1790151

Blackboard - http://www.blackboard.com/ Another vendor of robust online content development and dissemination. For Blackboard accessibility specifics, visit http://www.blackboard.com/products/access/index.htm

For both products, accessibility considerations have been addressed. As such, each vendor offers design tips and techniques that allow a content developer to create an accessible curriculum using their tools. As with most technologies, the course tools themselves are generally not inherently inaccessible, but the implementation of the tools (on the part of the author) may result in inaccessible products.
