eTutoring offers online academic support

With greater adoption of online and blended courses at Ohio’s higher education institutions, Web-based student services are important strategic tools and services to assist with the recruitment and retention of students. Online tutoring is a critical e-student service for higher education institutions as they better serve their students. Collaborating with Ohio’s higher educational community to ensure student success is central to OLN’s mission. Fifteen public two-year and four-year colleges created the Ohio eTutoring Collaborative in late 2009 with the hopes of saving money while providing more tutoring services for their students. More than 70,000 Ohio college students have access to free online tutoring in math, calculus, statistics and writing. Synchronous sessions with math tutors are offered every day of the week from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. Students can post eQuestions or they can enter an eChat room to work with a tutor directly utilizing video, audio, eChat (instant messaging-like dialogue), and a whiteboard. Papers can be uploaded for an asynchronous review by a writing tutor. Trained tutors answer questions, point to areas of concern, and provide “next steps” in the writing process. If your institution is interested in this statewide-initiative, we welcome your inquiry. Please contact Karen Boyd, eTutoring Program Coordinator, 614-485-6524, kboyd@oln.org.
