Choosing a school for your child is extremely important. There are many different factors that may influence your decision and it is worth considering many things. The following may be things that you want to think about.
The head teacher is the person who has most influence in the school. Their views will be reflected in the way the school is run and so it is important to find out what their attitude is like. You should be able to meet them and get a tour of the school when you are making your decision as to which school to pick. You will be able to ask them about the school ethos and find out whether this is something that you agree with. Of course, the other teaching staff are important to. It can be good to see whether you can meet some, to get an idea of what they are like. All school will have a mix and not all teachers will be as good as others, but it can be a good idea to see whether you can meet some of the other staff as well.
Obviously how well the school does with regards to the results of the pupils is very important. You will want to know that your children will have a good chance of achieving a lot while they are at school. If most children perform well, then it indicates that there is a good chance that your children will as well.
Pastoral care can be very important. If a child does not feel that they are being looked after by staff at school it may make it difficult for them to settle in to a new school. Obviously younger children will need more than older ones and some children will need it more than others.
Closer to Home
Getting to school is an important consideration. If you do not live very close to your school of choice, then it may take some time for your child to get there. If they have to walk a long distance or take several buses, then it could mean that they will have a lot of their day taken up with travel. This could be difficult as it could cut in to their homework time or their social time. It can be tiring as well which could mean that they will not do as well in school.
There are other factors which may apply as well such as the possible cost of a school, the catchment area, the subjects offered and the reputation of the school. It is important to consider which factors are most important to you and your child and then use these to decide which school will be best. By visiting the potential schools and looking at their websites, you will get a better idea of what they will be like and whether or not they will be suitable for your child.
