Tips for Successfully Mixing Study and Family Life

Studying for further qualifications is a good way to enjoy greater earning potential and better career prospects. Once you have a college degree from an online nursing program or similar, you can expect to earn at least $20k more. Of course, this is all very well, but what happens if you have a family to take care of, as well as finding the time to study?

It is difficult to combine study and family life. It is even more difficult if you have to work full-time, too. Luckily, there are ways to make it easier, so if you have recently enrolled on an online accelerated nursing program with Arizona State University, here are some tips to help you make it work.

Study Online

Online study works well for people with a busy life. With online study, you don’t have to attend classes on set days. Instead, you can work at times that suit you, which is perfect if you have kids to take care of.

Create a Study Schedule

It helps to be organized when you are trying to fit studying around a family. One way to do this is to work out a study schedule, so you and your family know exactly when you need to study and when you have assignments due. Pin your schedule somewhere prominent so everyone can see it. The refrigerator is a good place.

Flexible Study Time

It pays to be flexible on when and where you study if you have family responsibilities. Rather than sitting down every evening to write essays and do some revision, which might be difficult if the kids need help with their homework, try to fit in study time around your kids and partner. For example, if your kids go to bed in the afternoon for a nap, spend an hour working, or if they go to a class after school, take your books along so you can work while they do gym or dance.

Some parents find that getting up an hour earlier in the morning works for them. Alternatively, you might find it easier to study in the evening, once the kids have gone to bed. It’s really a case of trial and error to see what works best for you.

Share the Chores

Since you will have even less time than usual to do the household chores, now is a good time to ask your family to do their share. Partners should already be helping out, but if they are not pulling their weight around the house now is a good time to remind them it takes two people to make a relationship work.

Ask for Help

Never be ashamed to ask for help. It isn’t easy trying to fit study in when you have a family to take care of. There are only so many hours in the day and you do need to take care of yourself too. So if it’s all getting too much, ask friends and family to help.
